Located in Brownsville, Texas, IDEA Frontier College Preparatory School is a charter school and was established less than a decade ago, in 2006. The primary focus for students of this charter school is solid preparation for college.
For the first few years of operation, the school housed its students in portable buildings, but by 2008, permanent buildings were finished. The latest rankings by “U.S. News & World Report” placed IDEA Frontier College Preparatory school in 11th place for the state of Texas. Its swift rise to the top of school rankings might have something to do with its motto which is, “No Excuses!”
In addition to its status as a leading high school in Texas, the school also ranked at number 60 for quality schools nationwide. “U.S. News” also gave the school high marks for math and reading proficiency of its students.
Total enrollment at IDEA Frontier Preparatory School hovers around 630 and the school also features heavy minority enrollment of around 97%, according to figures reported to the federal government. However, students of any ethnic background are encouraged to attend the preparatory school from grades 6 to 12.
Recently, one of the school’s teachers received an award from the state’s education board as the Rising Star Secondary Category which sent $5,000 to the school for the students, as well as $5,000 for the teacher’s accomplishment.
The school sits extraordinarily close to the Mexican border and its enrollment is representative of the internationally focused community of Brownsville. It’s one of just a few facilities in the top schools of Texas that isn’t located in Dallas or Houston. Students and families who live in the town are just a short drive away from the gorgeous Gulf Coast and South Padre Island.
